About us

Ajax was established in 1975 by an ex-Hotpoint engineer who saw a gap in the domestic spares & appliance market in the Ipswich area. The shop originally started in Queen Street with just one engineer working on small appliances and one man working the counter. By the early 1980’s Ajax had soon outgrown the premises in Queen Street and looked to move to a bigger store within the town centre, Ajax settled into its new home number 2 St Nicholas Street. Ajax’s business grew steady over the years selling spares accessories and a small selection of vacuums and also expanding throughout East Anglia with shops in Bury ST Edmunds and Colchester. It wasn’t until 1996 that things would change and Ajax would further expand its range of domestic appliances by opening 4 St Nicholas Street as a dedicated showroom selling all types of domestic appliances from irons and kettles to cookers and washing machines.

In 2000 after many years at the helm of Ajax the original owner decided to take a back seat in the day to day running of Ajax Domestic Spare and semi-retired. The job of running the shops was handed over to the husband and wife team of Graham and Diane Allen who had been running the Ipswich store for nearly 10 years. At about the same time it was decided to close both the Colchester and Bury St Edmunds.

In June of 2003 the business was sold to Graham and Diane Allen as the original owner retired to the south of France. Ajax had always been a family run business; even with new owner’s this still had not changed.
Under the new management changes were soon seen inside the store allowing for a friendlier customer environment while still offering Ajax’s first class service. Ajax began to become well known for great
deals on small kitchen appliances’ specializing in manufactures seconds, while still offering larger appliances at competitive prices.

In 2009 Ajax was not alone with being affected by the current financial climate and although surviving - savings were needed to be made. A decision was taken that the showroom would be moved into number 2
St Nicholas Street. Work started in late January 2009 and after many long days and some long nights Ajax reopened its showroom and spares counter with a complete revamp. This saw the dated style change completely to a new clean and fresh store including the showroom. To coincide with the revamp of our store Ajax was approached by a major appliance manufacture offering access to large range of graded appliances at discounted prices. In April 2014 we moved to 223 Foxhall Road IP3 8LF

Ajax now offers the same service plus much more. Our showroom is well stocked from eco-friendly kettles to A+ rated washing machines, while our spares department still stock’s over 5000 spare parts from belts to bags and pumps to elements. Our staff is highly trained and knowledgeable on a wide range of appliances and is always happy to assist where they can. Due to our close relationships with most major appliance manufactures any part we don’t stock we can usually obtain within 24 hours. Our workshops remain very active in repairs of both small appliances and vacuum cleaner.

Ajax’s prides itself on its reputation and its excellent customer services, we have a passion for our market and enjoy assisting our customer’s.
